Sometimes I wonder what people think of me since I seem to have this super-klutz problem …
Last Friday was a pretty busy day for us. We had an appointment 40 miles away in the morning (2+ hours round trip) and then an event on base for dinner. This is not typical of our days, it’s usually pretty rough on us to have 2 really long appointments in one day and I’m going to blame Friday’s incident on that!
We got home from our appointment and I immediately got lunch together and once everyone had eaten, I put the baby to bed for her nap. I finished cleaning up the kitchen and happened to notice the powder room trash was full.
Note: You need to know I was wearing a zipped-up hoodie and my phone was in the pocket.
I got a new bag and bent over the toilet to pick up the trash can. It was that very instant that I heard a KER-PLUNK! Startled, I looked down to see my cell phone quickly sinking in the toilet.
With absolutely ZERO hesitation, I plunged my bare hand (an sleeve) into toilet water and snatched that baby out of there! I ran to the kitchen counter frantically trying to get the back of the case off so I could remove the battery and SIM card. I was a wreck, shaking from crazy amounts of adrenaline and slippery because my hands were wet. The entire time I’m thinking how dumb I am because this is the only phone I have -we don’t have a land line and Michael has his phone with him in Iraq. To make matters worse, we are moving overseas in a few months and it would be even dumber if I had to buy a new phone and then have no use for it once we move.
Finally calming myself enough to think, I dried my hands and was able to get the cover off.
Then I remembered having read several places online about what to do if your electronic device gets submerged in water.
You place all components in uncooked rice and let it sit for 24+ hours (the idea is that the rice will pull out the moisture and soak it up). That’s exactly what I did!
Saturday afternoon, with much anxiety, I removed all of the pieces from the rice, cleaned it up and put it back together. I then said a prayer that it would function properly and tried to power it on.
Much to my surprise, it turned on and it works perfectly! I am so thankful.

This sounds more like a success then a fail! Glad it came to a happy ending/
Oh dear! I feel your panic! I accidentally left my phone in my unlocked van while I ran into the grocery store for something quick. When I got out – it was gone! I freaked all the way home! When I got there and unloaded the groceries I discovered my phone had slipped under the driver’s seat. Whew! So glad yours turned out okay!

Oh thank heavens! That is a big deal especially when it’s your only connection to your Hubby. Where are you moving?

I was a shaky mess! I posted a mayday on Twitter and had 2 friends offer me their old phones – so I did have a FREE backup plan! I was incredibly surprised when the phone actually worked afterward!
We are moving to Turkey at the end of July! And we are very excited!
Hi – I just came across your blog and am now a new follower!! I accidentally washed my phone when my husband was gone to Afghanistan and tried to dry it out but ended up having to get a new one. I’m glad you were able to dry yours and that it worked perfectly, hopefully I won’t drop mine in water but its good to know the rice trick really works. I look forward to getting to know you a bit more. Leene
