This evening while I was preparing dinner (nearly an hour later than normal…), Jacob asked if we could make some muffins so they could have some for a snack before bedtime and then again for breakfast tomorrow.
My very first reaction was “no way, it’s already nearing 6:00 and we haven’t even eaten yet.”
If you had seen my kitchen at that point, you would have wondered how I could possibly make muffins in such a disastrous place. Dinner prep and then actual dinner dishes were un-rinsed and stacked wherever there was a place. The dishes in the dishwasher were clean and needed to be unloaded and then re-loaded. It was truly a disaster. Oh, and Rachael was still sitting in her high chair waiting to be cleaned up and put to bed!
However, while we were eating something inside me (maybe it was that little tugging from God) made me re-examine the situation and decide that yes, we could make some muffins after dinner.
As soon as were finished eating, I got Rachael ready for and into bed and then began cleaning up the kitchen so we could get started.
The boys were unusually excited about baking with me, so as they donned their aprons and began helping me pull out all the ingredients necessary for Phoebe’s Honey Pumpkin Muffins, I had a realization that this could be such a good bonding/quality time for us.
And it WAS. We had so much fun mixing up the batter and getting the muffins into the oven. We finished cleaning up the kitchen while they were baking.
We even read THREE chapters of Magic Tree House #2: The Knight at Dawn (our current homeschool read aloud) while the muffins were cooling!
Then we each had a scrumptious snack!
This was definitely an unexpected, yet very special time with my boys tonight! A finer thing, for sure!
They didn’t mind too much staying up an HOUR past their bedtime, either!

How cute are those aprons? If we have a little boy, I will have to make him one! I have a ton of my husband’s uniforms that are lying around.

Awesome! It’s HARD to do fun things like that in the evening hours. I’m all about getting cleaned up and into bed. Good for you to listen to the “tugging.”
Kudos to you for being flexible and enjoying that time with your kids!

Love the man aprons! My little guy would go crazy if I made him one of those–going to try it.
The kitchen is “mom’s” domain & kids love it so much when we invite them in to help.

Sounds like a great time with your boys. It seems like the impromptu bonding opportunities always turn out to be some of the best.
